Our Top 10 Favourite Keto Foods: Dietitian-Approved!

Saahil and I have followed a keto lifestyle for more than a year now. On our Instagram, you can see what kind of keto foods we eat and what kind of delicious keto recipes we create. We also get many questions about the products we use on a regular basis and what the products are that make a well-formulated keto diet.

Therefore, we decided to share our top 10 favourite keto foods of which we always have a stock in our fridge or cabin. You won't find meat and fish in this list, since this is something we always buy fresh!

1. Free-range eggs

Definitely our favourite! We eat them everyday and at least 30 eggs a week. They contain so many different vitamins and minerals that are very important on a keto diet like sodium, potassium and vitamin B6. Did you know that the egg yolk contains all fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)? To be aware of animal wellfare, do pick the free-range version.

2. Avocados

Fruits are limited on a keto diet, but avocados arenโ€™t! This fruit is full of unsaturated fats and many vitamins and minerals, especially potassium and vitamin K. We love making creamy green smoothies and an avocado is the perfect ingredient for it.

3. (Frozen) green veggies

Vegetables are extremely important on keto, since they contain fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. We are advocates of a well-formulated keto diet and this means eating at least 400 grams of vegetables each day! In our fridge, you mostly find spinach, stir-fry vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower and zucchini. Endless varieties and dishes possible with these veggies.

4. Grass fed butter

Can't miss this in our fridge for baking and making our keto coffees. We always use grass fed butter, since it contains way more omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin K2 compared to regular butter. In addition, you find up to five times more of the fatty acid conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in it. This type of fat has significant health benefits such as improved metabolic health and reduced body fat levels when consuming a dose between 3 and 6 grams per day.

5. Macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts are highest in monounsaturated fats of all types of nuts. Monounsaturated fats may boost heart health by lowering your total and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Besides that, macadamia nuts contain decent amounts of fiber, manganese, thiamine, and copper. They can also be quite dangerous, cause itโ€™s difficult to just stick to a few and then you end up eating a bit too many calories and too many carbs without knowing ;) We love to add a handful to our green smoothie or use it in our full fat yogurt bowl.

6. Old cheese

The one thing we love about doing keto, is eating cheese. Cheese literally makes every meal! It also contains good amounts of fat and calcium. We do try to reduce this amount a bit, since cheese does stay quite a processed food product.

7. Almond flour

A necessity for all our keto buns, waffles, cookies, pizza, and pancakes! We always buy almond flour in bulk; say hello to keto on a budget.

8. Heavy cream

For in our keto coffee as well. We also use it in our dinner recipes to add some extra creaminess.

9. 85% dark chocolate with MCT

After dinner, we like to indulge in a small piece of dark chocolate. Did you know that cacao is a powerful source of antioxidants, magnesium, iron, and copper? Pick a brand with the least amount of sugars or try the bars from Funky Fat Foods! These chocolate bars contain with MCT oil only 1 gram of net carbs. High-quality MCT oil is converted directly into energy, and is therefore perfect to provide you with quick energy for mental clarity and focus.

10. Frozen berries

Fruits are limited, yet we do find them important to include in our diet! Berries such as blackberries, raspberries and strawberries are high in vitamins, and fiber whereas lower in carbohydrates compared to other types of fruit. We already mentioned we believe in a well-formulated keto diet, so these red fruits do play an important role in this.

Of course there are many more important food products, such as extra virgin olive oil, MCT oil, full fat greek yogurt, ghee, coconut oil, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, nut butter and so on! And we have not even discussed the fresh herbs and spices we frequently use. I think we can and will write a complete article about the latter ones!
